Ive got a 2015 MacBook Pro that Ive had for a few months now. The more modern macOS versions, as you said, have moved a lot of stuff out of System into Other and perhaps more locations too. My System on my Mac mini has over 100 GB too. you can safely remove unnecessary system files and caches using system cleaner apps or built-in macOS tools. The more I look at Mojave and High Sierra, the more I think my System in both are so big because Apple lumped way more stuff into them back then. Using About This Mac The easiest way to check your Mac’s system storage is by using the built-in About This Mac feature. I was able to clear up my problem pretty quickly. If you’ve noticed that your Mac’s system data is taking up too much space. That gave me conflicting reports each restart but did inform me on one restart that ~100 GB of data was purgeable. 1 EDIT: Thanks to Fishrrman for their suggestion to use DiskWave. You can also look at the built in Disk Utility. The directory has restrictive permissions, so I assume that was the culprit.ĭeleting that directory isn't harmful to the system as far as I know, and it regenerates when the OS needs it again. Daisy Disk, however, did find a glob of ~75 GB that it couldn't scan because of permissions, even when scanning as admin. Now my System section is 50 GB (used to be 120 GB).ĭisk Inventory X gave me different sizes than the System Information window and it didn't find any problematically large files. The system couldn't read the size of the directory so I figured it was a problem folder, so I deleted it, emptied the garbage, and restarted. That tool reports that 'System' is taking 132 gigs.

#System storage taking up way too much space in macos sierra full#
I read an answer somewhere to an issue related to this that I could delete the folder in /System/Library/Caches/. The System Information app popped-up today telling my disk is nearly full (65 gigs of 256 gig drive). I restarted a few times and nothing seemed to happen. One night the size of the 'System' section of my storage increased 40 GB in an hour (though, I am running the High Sierra Beta). I believe that when I got my MBP, the size was around 16 GB.
